ArtsQuest’s Linny Awards: A Night of Recognition in Bethlehem

The Linny Awards, an annual event organized by ArtsQuest, celebrated the remarkable achievements of local artists, educators, and philanthropists in Bethlehem on Thursday, November 9. The ceremony, which recognizes individuals for their longstanding dedication to the arts, honored ten distinguished personalities from various fields.

Among the awardees was Pablo Batista, a renowned percussionist, who received the Performing Artist of the Year award. Batista, known for his contributions to Grammy-winning albums and collaborations with notable artists, has been a significant figure in the local music scene, despite battling retinitis pigmentosa since his early 20s.

Dr. Lee Riley, a visual artist and a professional at St. Luke’s Cancer Center, was honored with the Visual Artist of the Year award. Riley's artistic journey, inspired by his late grandmother's legacy, reflects his deep connection to the arts and his community.

The ceremony also recognized the contributions of students and educators. Isabelle Morales, a senior at Liberty High School, was awarded the Student Artist Scholarship, highlighting her academic and artistic aspirations. Beth McFadden received the Arts Educator of the Year Award for her dedication to nurturing young talents.

The event paid tribute to several individuals for their lifetime achievements and philanthropic efforts in the arts. Among them were Barb and the late Jack Yaissle, Chuck and Cindy Yeoman, and Brenda and John McGlade, all of whom have significantly contributed to the cultural landscape of Bethlehem.

Boyle Construction was acknowledged with the Business Supporter of the Arts award for its commitment to investing in local arts organizations.

The Linny Awards, named after the late artist and philanthropist Marlene "Linny" Fowler, not only celebrate individual achievements but also underscore the vibrant and growing arts scene in Bethlehem.

Corey Mullins & Carly Sedlock Triumph at St. Luke’s D&L RaceFest Marathon

The inaugural St. Luke’s D&L RaceFest, a collection of running and walking events, marked a day of significant achievements in the Lehigh Valley. The marathon, which began in Allentown and concluded in Easton, witnessed Corey Mullins of Easton winning his first marathon with a time of 2:37:02. The event, which replaced the St. Luke’s Via Marathon, included a marathon relay, half marathon run, and a half marathon walk. It signified the return of a full marathon to the Lehigh Valley after a three-year hiatus. The marathon route started on Hamilton Street in Allentown and ended at Scott Park in Easton, drawing a diverse group of participants.

Mullins, a St. Luke’s employee and a former cross-country and track athlete at Muhlenberg College, expressed his excitement about qualifying for the Boston Marathon in 2025. Sedlock, a Liberty High School alumna, shared her enthusiasm for participating in a hometown marathon.

The event was not just a competition but a celebration of community and personal milestones, with participants from various backgrounds coming together to achieve their running goals.

Bethlehem Pedestrian in Critical Condition After Vehicle Collision

In Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, a serious accident occurred on Stefko Boulevard, leaving a pedestrian in critical condition. The incident happened on Saturday November, 11, 2023 around 11:30 a.m., and the injured male was quickly taken to a hospital. The driver involved stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing police investigation. The accident has brought attention to pedestrian safety in the area.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Dedicated

In a solemn ceremony that concluded a week of national homage to Vietnam War veterans, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C. The memorial, designed by Yale architecture student Maya Lin, stood out for its simplicity and emotional impact. Unlike traditional memorials with heroic statues, Lin's design was a stark V-shaped black granite wall, listing the names of 57,939 Americans who perished in the Vietnam War, arranged chronologically by date of casualty.

Initially, the design faced opposition from some veterans' groups for its unconventional approach. However, following its dedication, the memorial underwent a dramatic shift in public perception. It became a place of pilgrimage for veterans, families, and the public, who came to trace the names of loved ones, leaving behind personal mementos and tributes. This act of remembrance transformed the memorial into a powerful site of collective mourning and healing.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial quickly rose to prominence as one of the most visited sites in Washington, D.C. It was described as a "community of feelings" and a sacred space that bridged the divide between war veterans and anti-war protestors, fostering a sense of national reconciliation and serving as the unheralded parade for returning veterans.

Redemption Victory: Bethlehem Catholic Dominates in Championship Shutout!

Bethlehem Catholic High School football team achieved a remarkable 29-0 win over Allentown Central Catholic in the District 11 Class 4A championship. Key players included Bryce Medina, Mekhi LaPierre, and Jacob Sutton, with significant contributions from quarterback Cayden Vassa. The team's balanced offense and robust defense under coach Ty Ward led to this significant victory, avenging last year's loss and setting a record for most district titles in District 11.
