The Answer to “Did You Know” Trivia:

Correct Answer: B) -8°C to -2°C (18°F to 28°F)

The optimal temperature range for producing the most snow is typically just below the freezing point, around -2°C to -8°C (28°F to 18°F). At these temperatures, the air can still hold a significant amount of moisture, and the colder temperature allows snowflakes to form and remain intact as they fall to the ground.

When the temperature is much below this range, the atmosphere holds less moisture, making significant snowfall less likely. Conversely, if the temperature is above this range, closer to the freezing point, the snow can turn into sleet or rain.

This optimal temperature range is one reason why certain regions, which maintain these temperatures during winter, often experience heavy snowfalls. However, other factors like humidity, the presence of a lifting mechanism (like a front or a mountain range), and the availability of moisture are also crucial in determining whether a snowfall event will be substantial.
